Oxo-Biodegradable Packaging

Degradtion time:

Regular plastic can take up to 400 years to be broken down, but...the Oxo-biodegradable plastics can be completely degraded in 2–5 years after the end of the products’ predetermined life-span


Degradable, Totally Degradable, Oxo-biodegradable - all these terms refer to the same system and include similar technologies, the common feature of these is that the progress of the primary degradation depends on any combination of light, heat, stress and air.

Bio-degradable, Bio-plastic, Hydro–biodegradable these terms are also the same as one another and refer to technologies where the degradation depends on the plastics being in a biologically active environment – for example, in compost and where the destruction of the material is a result of its consumption by microbes.

How does oxo-bio work?

  • Oxo-biodegradable plastic is an additive that is put into the basic polymer resin during manufacture of finished products (typically with a 1% inclusion rate)
  • Breaks the polymer’s chains, exposes the plastic molecule to the air and microbes
  • Plastic starts degrading at the end of its pre-determined life-span
  • Process of oxidation – caused by light, heat and stress
  • Bio-degradation completed by micro-organisms

Residues after completely degraded:

  • Water
  • CO2
  • Biomass
